Consume less, but better: towards more responsible cosmetics
Aug 04, 2026
Responsible cosmetics is not just another sales pitch. It's a response to a reality: the cosmetics industry is one of the most polluting in the world, between plastic packaging, non-biodegradable ingredients, globalized supply chains, and chemical formulas discharged into wastewater. Consuming less but better is a concrete stance with a measurable impact.
The environmental impact of conventional cosmetics
Here are some figures to frame the issue:
- The cosmetics industry generates more than 120 billion units of plastic packaging per year worldwide (pre-COVID reference figure, source Plastic Oceans International — to be checked for update)
- Many synthetic ingredients — silicones, microplastics, chemical UV filters — are non-biodegradable or poorly biodegradable and end up in aquatic environments
- Fast-beauty (rapid renewal of ranges, overconsumption of products) generates massive waste: half of the cosmetic products purchased are not used until depletion
💡 Note: this data should be used with caution in external communication — exact figures vary by source and year. The general principle remains valid.
Consume less: the most obvious impact
The first step towards more responsible cosmetics is to reduce the volume of products used. Not out of asceticism, but out of lucidity: do I really use all these products? Do they all have a real purpose?
A routine of 5 well-chosen products instead of twenty mediocre products means:
- Less packaging produced and disposed of
- Fewer chemical formulas in wastewater
- Less spending for a superior result
- Potentially better skin tolerance (fewer accumulated ingredients)
This is exactly the logic detailed in our article on minimalism applied to the bathroom.
Consume better: concrete criteria for choosing
"Better" does not mean "most expensive" or "greenest in marketing". Here are objective criteria:
Certification
Cosmos Organic (supported by Cosmébio in France) is the most rigorous standard for European organic cosmetics. It guarantees composition, production processes, and the absence of certain problematic synthetic ingredients. This is a real audit, not just communication. Our Austral Homme products bear this certification.
Short supply chain
The distance a product travels between its manufacture and your bathroom matters. A product made in Occitanie with local ingredients where possible has an incomparable logistical carbon footprint compared to a product assembled on the other side of the world. See our article Short supply chain in cosmetics: definition, advantages, and limitations.
Short and traceable formulation
Fewer ingredients mean less uncertainty about their origin and processing. A short formulation is easier to audit — for both manufacturer and consumer.
Packaging
Recycled glass, recycled plastic, refillable formats, solid soaps without packaging — these alternatives exist and are developing. Solid soaps are particularly interesting: no primary packaging necessary, superior durability to liquid gels, concentrated formula. Our solid soaps are part of this logic.
Greenwashing: the main risk when trying to consume better
Wanting to be more responsible in cosmetic purchases exposes one to a real risk: greenwashing. Conventional brands use environmental arguments without materializing them in their formulas or practices. Warning signs:
- Vague claims ("natural", "green", "eco") without third-party certification
- A long INCI list with problematic ingredients despite the organic positioning
- Green packaging for a product identical to conventional ones
- Lack of transparency on suppliers and manufacturing locations

Responsible cosmetics is not a sacrifice
This is perhaps the most important point to understand: choosing organic, local, short-formula skincare is not a concession on effectiveness. Austral Homme products are dermatologically tested, formulated by a specialized laboratory, and designed to meet the real needs of men's skin. Environmental responsibility and effectiveness are not mutually exclusive.
